‘Manifest Destiny’ exhibit reflects an optimistic America

By Alan G. Artner, TRIBUNE CRITIC June 19, 2008

Theme exhibitions are not purely art shows. They are displays of artworks that have been bent to other purposes. Organizers of these exhibitions invariably present the themes as something greater than a gathering of art for aesthetic reasons. And for casual viewers who like stories, not minding if they override artists’ intentions, that probably is true. Wyeth, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, John Sloan, Maynard Dixon, John Marin and a handful of other marvelously gifted artists who so memorably turned their minds, spirits and talents to paintings of the American seacoast and/or the American Southwest.Articles Connexes:

Top of the heap for cheap

With the expansive Porter lounge in Toronto, the later than usual check in times (afforded by the smallish scale of the operation), 11 flights daily into Newark Liberty (as of last month) and then the ease (and cheapness) with which you can get into downtown Manhattan from Newark airport monorail (free) to the Newark train station, then train ticket into Penn Station it almost feels like flying private. A slice of luxury in the air (usually for around $375.). Alternately, Air Canada gets you to the considerably closer LaGuardia direct from Montreal and Ottawa as well as Toronto for even less.

And that’s precisely what this weekend was about: ritzing it up in Manhattan without breaking the bank.

First stop, the Plaza.

The Plaza Hotel recently emerged from an extensive $450 million renovation that kept its Beaux Arts decor intact throughout legendary rooms such as the Palm Court, the Oak Bar, and the stunning new Fifth Avenue lobby. While staying there starts at around $800 per night (just a smidgen beyond my budget), I figured I could at least afford a taste of the high life at the hotel’s iconic Champagne Bar.

The Champagne Bar is where Truman Capote celebrated his literary success with a guest list of 540 of his nearest and dearest (among them, Oscar de la Renta and Sammy Davis Jr.). Capote’s famed Black replica christian louboutin and White Ball (circa 1966) was deemed red bottom pumps the Party of the Century, one would assume the 400 bottles of Tattinger the guests consumed that eve probably had something to do with that.

“Well now,” says my friend Shragit, settling further into her plushly upholstered chair arranged two by two red bottom shoes beside the soaring windows, “this is quintessential New York.”

We have the best seats in the house, overlooking Fifth Avenue. We order glasses of red bottom boots Veuve to toast Shragit’s birthday. It is poured tableside as we nibble on bar snacks of curry popcorn and nuts. We feel like queens.

“There’s a storm approaching,” says the maitre d’, popping by to gauge our comfort level. “You should have quite the show from here.” Then he asks where we’re going for dinner and within moments returns, presenting us with directions printed out on the thickest card stock I’ve ever felt. Shragit is smitten by every sip, sight and surface of the Plaza’s Champagne Bar. “It’s all very grand,” she says. “You just feel fortunate to have had this kind of experience.” (All in, $71.)

Our late night dinner reservations are at the new Jean Georges Vongerichten restaurant called The Mark, at The Mark Hotel, which, like the Plaza, has just louboutin replica undergone an extensive 21st century interior renovation all bold graphics and pops of colour, belying its classic 1927 exterior. It also happens to be located in the heart of one of Manhattan’s most elegant zip codes (Central Park, the MOMA, Christian Louboutin and Prada are all walking red bottom heels distance).

At The Mark, Shragit and I sip wine and share a few flavour packed plates, including Hamachi christian louboutin replica Sashimi with creamy avocado and a sprightly soy yuzu dressing, fresh tagliatelle with tomato, mozzarella and basil, and the knockout punch of pizza with black truffle and oozing Fontina cheese. Decadent? Decidedly so. Affordable? Yes: Dinner for two rings in at about $120, including wine and tip.

The next day we wake up early, ready to shop. It was the best season in New York, after all sales season! My recollection of that not so long ago morning is now hazy, a blur of consumerism gone mad, but let’s just say that by the end of it I had convinced myself that I had actually saved money by spending money. (Ladies, you know what I’m talking about!) But even before our shopping spree, we had walked out into sunshine that morning and into a live performance by the band Train (free concert) playing on the CBS plaza near our hotel. It turns out the overhead cameras were trained on us and we even made the news the next day (free publicity?).

Then we got coffees, walked through replica louboutin Central Park, bumped into Elmo (free hugs!) and red bottoms capped off the afternoon with more shopping before I took the train from Penn Station to Newark for my Porter flight home.

Basically, I think I may have to move to New York, especially now that I know I can afford to. And all in a manner to which I’ve quickly grown accustomed.Articles Connexes:
